SIEW 2017: Singapore Energy Lecture by Dy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean

Singapore, 22 May 2017. Mr Teo Chee Hean, Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security, will deliver the Singapore Energy Lecture on 23 October 2017 at the 10th Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW). The lecture will be a keynote at SIEW and will set the tone for discussions during the week from 23 to 27 October 2017 at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands Singapore, This year’s SIEW theme is "Rethinking Energy; Navigating Change". 

Deputy Prime Minister Teo will be joined by a distinguished line-up of global energy leaders at SIEW. Confirmed attendees include: Dr Fatih Birol, Executive Director, International Energy Agency (IEA); Mr Masakazu Toyoda, Chairman & CEO, Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ); Mr Yuji Kakimi, President, JERA; and Mr Nguyen Anh Tuan, Director General, Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam. They will discuss ways to stay nimble and navigate challenges in the evolving energy landscape.

The Singapore International Jazz Festival (SING JAZZ) 2017 takes place from 31 March to 2 April and offer 30 hours of world class music from multiple award-winning artists such as Esperanza Spalding, Chaka Khan, Gilles Peterson and Ray Parker Jr., as well as local favourites Aaron James Lee and Ernesto Enriquez. A highlight is the two-time Grammy Award winner Corinne Bailey Rae who released her self-titled debut album in 2006 which charted at No. 1 in the UK and No. 4 in the US.

Industry Context of MIS 2017

Myanmar’s construction industry is forecast to record rapid growth, at an annual average rate of 10.37%. In real terms, the industry’s value stood at US$8.2 billion in 2015, and is anticipated to value US$13.5 billion in 2020. This growth is supported by the country’s improving economic conditions; mainly depending on government investments in residential, energy and utilities, and public infrastructure projects, as well as a rise in foreign investments. Residential construction is the largest market in Myanmar’s construction industry, accounting for 49.9% of the industry value in 2015. The market rose from US$3.6 billion in 2011 to value US$5.0 billion in 2015, recording a CAGR of 17.89% in nominal terms. The market is forecast to remain the largest, to value US$9.7 billion in 2020. Transportation is the second-largest market, accounting for 19.4% of the industry’s total value in 2015. The market rose from US$1.3 billion in 2011 to US$1.9 billion in 2015, at a CAGR of 20.13%. Accordingly, the government will invest US$26.8 billion under the National Transport Master Plan, allocating funds to road, rail, marine and air transportation projects until 2030. This sector is expected to reach US$4.2 billion in 2020.               

What's on at Malaysia International Dive Expo (MIDE) 2017?

The 12th Malaysia International Dive Expo (MIDE) and the 4thAsia Dive Conference (ADCON) are scheduled from 12 to 14 May 2017 at Hall 1, Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur.

Both the event are moved from the month of July to the month of May to facilitate the fasting month and the Hari Raya celebration. This move is also to enable the preparation of Australia International Dive Expo (AIDE) collaborating with the Sydney International Boat Show (SIBS) scheduled from 3 to 7 August 2017 at ICC Sydney, Darling Harbour, Australia from 2017 onwards.

MIDE will move from Hall 3 to Hall 1 to a bigger hall space of 8,000sqm and will occupy a gross space of 12,000sqm. Anticipating more than 2,000 exhibitors, with 200 participating companies, MIDE is geared to welcome business entrepreneurs, tourism boards, dive agencies brand manufacturers and distributors to utilise the platform that has been created and designed to meet the lucrative business for every organisation. 

MIDE has a consistent track record of visitors to the expo. From the humble beginning from 2006 till todate the expo has generated approximately 110,000 visitors with an average minimum of 10,000 visitors yearly.

The expo is known as the hub for purchase of dive equipment, courses and dive travel destination. For the year of 2015 sales generated for the 3days event was at approximate of 8million and for the year of 2016 sales reached at approximate of 10million.  Anticipated turnover sales for 2017 is projected between 10 to 12 million. Coming from a niche industry, the expo has delivered and continue to deliver a great significant growth of revenue for participating companies and further contributes positively to a healthy economic growth towards the dive tourism.

Statistics of information collected for MIDE2016 include:

- Recorded visitors – 14,156

- More than 2,000 leading international brand participant

- More than 170 companies participated

- More than 3,000 courses sold

- 95% had interest in diving

- 80% attended by dive professionals

- 90% purchase of products

- 85% interest & purchase on dive travel

- Turnover sales over the three days was approximately MYR 10 million.

Amidst the above, Asia Dive Conference (ADCON) will enable visitors to explore more option of the conference that will take place during the 3days event. The venue for the conference will be within MIDE venue hall to enable visitors to have easy access to the Seminar Room.  ADCON will focus on bringing more insight on technical aspect on diving, servicing and maintenance of dive equipment, camera housing, demonstration on latest products, teaching on Photoshop techniques, exploring on nitrox certification courses and more.

Australia International Dive Expo 2017 Coincides with Sydney Boat Show

In 2017, and for the very first time, the Australia International Dive Expo (AIDE) is joining forces with the long-standing and hugely popular Sydney International Boat Show (SIBS) to bring water enthusiasts of all kinds the biggest recreational and sports water oriented event in Sydney, Australia from 3-7 August 2017 at the newly renovated International Convention Centre (ICC) in Sydney’s spectacular Darling Harbour.

We will provide amateur and professional divers, and those new to diving, a comprehensive platform to explore and develop their interests and love for the marine world.

About AIDE - Australia’s Largest Water Enthusiast’s Event

Sarawak International Dragon Boat Regatta 2016

In order to promotes local tourism and thereby increase tourist arrivals and receipts, the Sarawak International Dragon Boat Regatta will be held from 11th to 13th November at Kuching Waterfront, Sarawak, Malaysia.

Attaining the Sustainable Development Goals Conference in Singapore 2016

Conference on Attaining the Sustainable Development Goals – Environmental Law, Policy and Management will be held in Singapore from 9-11 November 2016

A high-profile conference with a focus on environmental law, policy and management aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be held for the first time in Singapore 2016.

The three-day conference explores the issues, challenges, solutions and implementation of law, policy, science and management of four specific SDGs: SDG Goal 12 – Sustainable Production and Consumption; Goal 13 – Climate Action; Goal 14 –Life below Water (Sustainable Oceans); and Goal 15 –Life on Land (Biodiversity Conservation). 

The organisers are Asia Pacific Centre for Environmental Law (APCEL), NUS Master of Science (Environmental Management) [MEM] and NUS Bachelor of Environmental Studies (BES). They have invited prominent speakers who will share their insights on achieving the SDGs.

About the Conference

In 2016, the NUS Law School’s Asia-Pacific Centre for Environmental Law (APCEL) celebrates its 20th Anniversary. Two degree programs focusing on the environment – the Master of Science in Environmental Management (MEM) and Bachelor of Environmental Studies (BES) also celebrate their 15th and 5th Anniversaries respectively.

To celebrate, APCEL, MEM and BES are coming together from 9-11 November 2016 to organise this three-day conference as well as the Asia Environment Lecture on 11 November 2016 at 5 pm.

Creativity and diversity will be the focus of Sustainable & Smart Tourism Forum 2016.

Under the theme “Co-creating life-changing tourism experiences", the 2016 Sustainable & Smart Tourism Forum (2016 SSTF) has been designed to offer a platform and a playground for gaining and sharing knowledge, skills and good practices around the world, in the fields of sustainable and smart tourism as well as smart cities.

The 2016 SSTF is supported by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. During this two-day journey focused on creativity and diversity, participants will be offered many opportunities to explore new perspectives in tourism innovation and marketing, while expanding their networks.
