RISI International Recycled Fiber and Containerboard Conference

The RISI International Recycled Fiber and Containerboard Conference is being held between 5-7 December 2018, in Shenzhen, China. The conference, which expects hundreds of delegates from as far away as Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa, will be themed around the slogan “Helping Paper Industry Make Better Decisions.” They are needed.

Following the Chinese government’s decision late last year to re-evaluate its waste paper import policy, the Asian recycling industry has changed dramatically. Indeed, from the start of 2018 as the world’s previous biggest scrap importer, China clamped down on imports of unsorted paper for recycling – a significant hit for both exporters (the US saw a drop of some 38% exports in H1 2018) as well as Asian businesses built on waste processing. Previously a multi-billion dollar business, recycled paper imports into China saw a sudden drop that has influenced not just Asia but European and American policies on recycling.

The organisers say the RISI event will emphasise specialist expertise that can provide key insights into the growing yet volatile market in China and Southeast Asia plus a holistic view of the market dynamics of recovered paper and containerboard, Held at JW Marriott Hotel Shenzhen in Guangdong, the conference is slated to appeal to decision-makers, recycled paper collectors, board producers, machinery suppliers and logistics operators as well as those concerned about the broader implications of the paper recycling industry.

The conference will address this other allied issues such as overall trends in North American and European paper recycling, and where the next emerging market will or might be for recovered paper export sourcing. Government delegates from many key countries are slated to attend, and will be able to update industry and other attendees on their latest policy decisions and how they affect the business. Industry experts will also discuss structural reform of macroeconomic policy, the latest development trends in the pulp and paper industry, and the overall state and key influences within the recovered paper industry.

Aspects of the business shift driven by these changes, including alternative source markets, improved local sourcing and new technology solutions will also be covered by conference presentations.

“RISI senior economists will also share the outlook for global recovered paper availability [as well as] offering a networking platform for participants from all the different sectors of the recovered paper value chain,” say the organisers.
