Green Disc 2012: Sustainable Development Solutions for All
Green Disc: Innovative Technologies for Sustainable Development – newer version released in June 2012
15 June 2012, Singapore. A bigger Green Disc will be released at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro in June 2012. The Green Disc provides ready information on essential matters that include energy, water, waste, ecosystem restoration, soil fertility restoration, carbon sequestration and more, for economic and environmentally sound development and reversing global warming. It will also be available for free acess on the web.
The Green Disc is published by The UNCSD Small Island Developing States Partnership in New Sustainable Technologies, with the support of Gibby Media Group. The First Edition of Green Disc, released at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in 2009 is now available on the web.
Thomas J.Goreau PHD, coordinator of the UNCSD Small Island Developing States Partnership in New Sustainable Technologies, will be distributing the Green Disc at Rio+20. "Technology innovators now have a way to get their message out to the world. Critical information can now be disseminated in an improved, cost-efficient, and environmentally-friendly way online, as a constantly growing on-line encyclopedia of innovative solutions to the major problems facing humanity’s future," he said.
Dr Goreau who is also the President of Global Coral Reef Alliance will be receiving the UNDP Equator Award for Community-Based Development for coral reef and fishery restoration in Bali.
What is the Green Disc?
The Green Disc (available in a thin disc format as well as online) is a priceless resource for policymakers, planners, funding agencies, students, and the concerned public to learn about innovative, proven new technologies that can be scaled from poor, isolated, rural communities to urban megalopolises.
Green Disc’s 60 chapters on Innovative Technologies for Sustainable Development cover renewable energy, waste recycling, water purification, ecosystem restoration, soil fertility restoration, carbon sequestration, shore protection, sustainable agriculture and mariculture technologies, and more.
One chapter contributed by Mallika Naguran, environment writer and founder of Gaia Discovery, deals with how to make water from air and sea, covering technologies from artisanal fog harvesting to modern day atmospheric water dehumidifier, desalination, reverse osmosis to innovative thermal-ionic process. "Desalination with the use of solar power is now possible and commercially available, which opens up new oases of hope for water-challenged areas," says Naguran. "There are even more technologies out there on how to get clean water from air or from the sea, described in the Green Disc. A must read for anyone needing water in a cost-effective manner."
While the focus is on Small Island Developing States, the innovative technologies shown are universally applicable in developing and developed countries.
If these under-utilized technologies were applied on the scale needed they would solve many of our most pressing global energy, environmental, ecological, and economic problems.
